In a significant blow to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Edo State lost another key lawmaker, Nicholas Asonsere of Ikpoba Okha constituency, who defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday.
Asonsere’s defection brings the APC’s representation in the Edo State House of Assembly to 15 members, while the PDP now has only 9.
The lawmaker explained his decision to join the APC, citing the developmental strides of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration, particularly in his constituency.
He praised the construction of a flyover bridge and other people-oriented projects that have been delivered under the current leadership.
Asonsere emphasized, “When I was a child, I reasoned like a child, but now that I am a man, I must reason like one. I cannot remain on the sidelines while significant development is taking place in my constituency. It is time to support the governor’s vision.”
The lawmaker went on to clarify that he personally reached out to Governor Okpebholo, expressing his desire to join the APC.
“I cannot remain on the left while the governor is working on the right. It is time for me to join hands with him to ensure that the good work continues.”
APC Acting Chairman, Jaret Tenebe, who welcomed Asonsere into the party, called his defection a “political tsunami” that is shaking the foundations of the PDP.
He stressed that Asonsere’s departure from the PDP marks a key turning point in the state’s political history.
“His defection signifies the collapse of the PDP in Edo State, especially with the loss of a political figure who once contributed to its prominence. This is a clear sign that the PDP can no longer sustain its relevance,” Tenebe remarked.
He further praised Asonsere for aligning with the future, stating, “We are proud to have him join the APC, where his determination will help shape Edo into a state that others envy.”
Tenebe also extended an olive branch to remaining PDP members, urging them to work with Governor Okpebholo for the continued development of Edo State.
