Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar, has presented the prestigious Zanzibar Gate to Prateek Suri, billionaire entrepreneur, investor, and Founder of the $5 billion-valued Maser Group.
The award acknowledges Suri’s transformative role in Africa’s social and economic progress.
The national honour, one of Zanzibar’s highest, was given during an exclusive meeting at the Presidential Palace in Stone Town.
There, President Mwinyi and Suri discussed the future of East African development, investment, and philanthropy.
Described as “Africa’s Indian billionaire visionary,” Suri has become a key player in the continent’s growth, pioneering smart infrastructure and financing inclusive fintech solutions in underfunded regions.
Praising his bold investments and philanthropic dedication, President Mwinyi highlighted Suri’s “genuine passion for the people of Africa.”
The Zanzibar Gate is traditionally reserved for those who have had a profound impact on Africa’s development.
It symbolises trust, unrestricted access, and a lasting partnership with the Zanzibar state. Suri, who entered Africa’s market with Maser Group, now valued at $5 billion and recognised as Africa’s 7th unicorn, continues to solidify his position as a leading investor on the continent.
As part of his deepened commitment to East Africa, Suri plans to establish a regional family office in Zanzibar, managing investments in fintech, mining, and smart urban infrastructure across Tanzania, Kenya, and Rwanda.
Suri commented, “Zanzibar is not only a cultural jewel but also a future hub for innovation, trade, and sustainable growth. I am honoured to receive the Gate of Zanzibar, which strengthens my ties to this region.”
During the discussions, President Mwinyi and Suri outlined plans to co-develop a Zanzibar Digital Economy Fund, aimed at supporting tech entrepreneurs, expanding digital literacy, and creating youth employment opportunities.
Suri’s extensive philanthropic efforts, focusing on community-based education, sustainable housing, and women-led businesses, were also acknowledged as exemplary leadership.
