In a decisive move to safeguard lives and enforce environmental laws, the Lagos State Government has shut down Adamo Market in Ikorodu following the discovery of illegal structures built directly beneath high-tension power lines.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the closure via a statement on social media on Wednesday, stating that the enforcement action was in line with the state’s mandate to protect lives and uphold the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017.

“This dangerous encroachment not only violates the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, but also poses a serious threat to human lives and infrastructure,” Wahab said.

Following an inspection of the market, the commissioner revealed that the scale of infractions found warranted immediate closure of the market until further notice.

“Our goal is not just enforcement, but the protection of all residents,” he added, urging market leaders and traders across Lagos to steer clear of illegal constructions and comply with environmental regulations.

Wahab emphasised that safety and sustainability remain non-negotiable priorities for the state government.
