The Kano State Government has announced the suspension of its monthly sanitation exercise for April to allow for the smooth conduct of the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Dr. Dahiru Hashim, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, made the announcement in a statement issued by Ismail Gwammaja, the Director of Public Enlightenment, on Thursday in Kano.
The UTME, organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), began on April 24, 2025, across the country. To ensure the examination proceeds without disruptions, the state government decided to pause the sanitation exercise for this month.
“The decision was reached after thorough consultations with relevant stakeholders. The suspension aims to prevent any possible challenges that could interfere with the smooth conduct of the examination in the state,” said Hashim.
He clarified that the suspension was specific to April, with the sanitation exercise set to resume in May. The commissioner appealed for residents’ understanding and cooperation during this period.
Hashim emphasized that the state government remains committed to maintaining a clean and healthy environment, while ensuring that sanitation activities do not clash with significant events like the UTME.
In closing, the commissioner urged Kano residents to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly in drainage systems, to prevent blockages and ensure the proper functioning of water channels.
