Singer Burna Boy has spoken up about the level of gatekeeping he experienced in the entertainment industry.
Burna Boy said this while commenting on a video of Obi Asika’s interview.
Obi Asika who is a known creative artist and Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture in Nigeria, recently opened up about some challenges in the entertainment industry.
Obi also gave a glimpse of Burna Boy’s experience with gatekeeping before fame.
“This same Burna Boy that’s a million dollars plus today, they be blocking him, He’s from Port Harcourt, he’s not from Lagos, so they be blocking him,” Obi Asika said in the Afropilitan interview.
Obi Asika also revealed that at that time, Burna Boy was not given the opportunity to perform for free.
“The same Burna Boy has bypassed everybody and exploded and now he can’t be blocked anymore,” he stated.
As a response to the interview, Burna Boy commented on the post, agreeing with Obi Asika’s statement. He also shed more light on this experience, explaining that he still faces gatekeeping despite his fame.
“This is not even half of the story. They did everything they possibly could to break me, they are even still trying their best lol but all they did was create this unquenchable FIRE that will continue to burn them for eternity.” He stated in his comment.
The Grammy awards winner had previously spoken up about his rocky start in his career journey and Asika’s recent revelation has given more artists an opportunity to share their experiences as well.
