Market women and local groups have raised N5.5 million to purchase the APC nomination forms for Mr. Amodu Shehu, a local IT professional and son of a well-known Oyingbo pepper seller, to contest the Lagos Mainland Local Government chairmanship.

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has scheduled elections for July 12 in all 57 council areas, and Shehu’s nomination is supported by traders, artisans, youths, and community leaders in the area.

During the unveiling of his forms and official declaration on Friday, Shehu expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming backing he has received. He promised to honor the trust placed in him and deliver a leadership that is inclusive and people-centered.

Reflecting on his upbringing in the Lagos Mainland, Shehu emphasized his commitment to prioritizing education, youth empowerment, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development. “With my background as a pepper seller’s son from a humble community, I understand the struggles and will fight for meaningful change,” Shehu said. “Together, we can secure a better future for the children of Lagos Mainland through unity and commitment to progress.”

Shehu described his ambition as a result of his love for the community and a strong vision for rapid development. “I seek to provide visionary, purposeful, and competent leadership that meets the hopes of our people,” he stated.

Market leaders such as Mrs. Iyabode Agboola and Ms. Bakare Adetokunbo spoke passionately about why they and their fellow traders supported Shehu. Agboola noted, “Amodu is one of us. He grew up in our market and knows the reality of our everyday lives. This campaign is our collective project, and we stand firmly behind him.”

Similarly, Adetokunbo highlighted Shehu’s deep understanding of the value of hard-earned money, saying, “His mother sells peppers like me. He knows the value of every naira. He won’t forget his roots.”

Artisans, too, rallied behind Shehu. Local carpenter Mr. Femi Akande expressed their support, stating, “Shehu will fight for our future and for our children’s future.”

Shehu also received backing from various political figures, including Ward G Councillor and youth leader, Mr. Biliaminu Saka, who described him as a dynamic and youthful leader with a record of mobilizing young people for positive change. “He brings energy, passion, and fresh ideas to local government,” Saka added.

Ward D Councillor Mr. Ayodele Isiekwene also praised Shehu’s grassroots appeal, noting, “He’s one of us and understands our challenges. Amodu will be a true voice for the people.”
