Whitemoney, who was on hand to receive the Afrobeats Single of the Year award on behalf of singer Flavour, sparked controversy when he stated that he was accepting the award "on behalf of the Igbos."
Nigerian media personality Dotun Ojuolape Kayode, known as Do2dtun, has expressed his disapproval of reality TV star Whitemoney’s comments during the 17th Headies Awards held at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos on Sunday.
Whitemoney, who was on hand to receive the Afrobeats Single of the Year award on behalf of singer Flavour, sparked controversy when he stated that he was accepting the award “on behalf of the Igbos.”
His statement drew criticisms from various quarters, with critics suggesting that the remark was inappropriate for an event celebrating pan-African music achievements.
Do2dtun, in a tweet, criticized Whitemoney for introducing tribal references during the ceremony.
He stated, “‘On behalf of the Igbos.’ I am sorry, that was so unnecessary. It didn’t need that type of narrative. It’s an award won by an African, for Afrobeat, and a Nigerian.”
X user @EasYQuality wrote, “I think people can give a speech however they like it,” while @nikkywinky added, “Who sent him to collect the award for Flavour? It doesn’t look like Flavour told him to do that.”
