Award-winning Afrobeat singer Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, has come under fire for disrespecting Afrobeat giants Davido, Burna Boy, and Wizkid during a performance at his sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden in the US.
During the concert, Rema made a controversial entrance, bringing out statues of the three legendary figures—Davido, Burna Boy, and Wizkid—as he walked onto the stage.
The act seemed to imply that Rema now stood on equal footing with these iconic artists. However, his move to declare that there were no longer just the “Big 3” but instead a “Big 4” added fuel to the fire.
This declaration has sparked significant backlash from fans and critics alike. Notably, Daniel Regha, a popular online commentator, slammed Rema for his actions, calling them disrespectful. He tweeted:
“Rema will never be in the same league as Davido, Wizkid, or Burna. What he did, performing ‘Hehehe’ next to their mannequins, isn’t entertainment but an act of subtle disrespect. His management should have known better, there’s a thin line between admiration and mockery.”
Regha further emphasized that Rema could not yet be considered part of the “Big 3” or even the “Top 10,” unless referring to newer artists from his generation. His comments were echoed by some fans, who expressed similar sentiments, criticizing Rema for stepping into a space that had already been defined by established artists.
One user, Kiddiesspat.ng, supported Regha’s view, adding, “Why claim ‘Big 4’ when Olamide is also in the conversation?” While another, Miami_stark29, agreed, suggesting that Rema should carve out his own place rather than altering an existing hierarchy.
However, not everyone was in agreement. Some fans defended Rema’s actions, including Urban vogue.closette, who argued that Rema wasn’t disrespecting the legends but rather showing them respect by acknowledging their influence in his journey. “It’s his way of saying, ‘I see those who came before me, and I’m here too.’ That’s not disrespect, it’s growth,” the fan wrote.
