Gordon, described as a "gentle soul with no history of violence," was found dead in a bed and breakfast in Thornton Heath on 24 December 2023—a room registered under Campbell’s name.

In a chilling case that has left a family shattered and a community horrified, Paul Campbell, 43, has been convicted of manslaughter after brutally killing Gordon Ogunmuyiwa, a 62-year-old former doctor, on Christmas Eve.

The verdict was delivered on Thursday, 8 May at Woolwich Crown Court, after a gripping three-week trial. Campbell, of Dunheved Road West, Thornton Heath, now awaits sentencing on Tuesday, 10 June.

Gordon, described as a “gentle soul with no history of violence,” was found dead in a bed and breakfast in Thornton Heath on 24 December 2023—a room registered under Campbell’s name.

When paramedics arrived, Campbell was nowhere to be found.

A sinister trail soon emerged: for over a year, Gordon—already battling ill health—had been the target of repeated financial and physical abuse by Campbell.

The final attack, described as “vicious” and loud enough to be heard by neighbours, became the fatal blow.

“This was a callous and calculated campaign of cruelty,” said Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Townsend, who led the investigation. “Campbell’s greed and selfishness destroyed an innocent life. Gordon was taken from his loved ones in the most brutal way.”

A murder probe was quickly launched. Investigators uncovered that Campbell had used Gordon’s credit cards, even purchasing an iPhone from a second-hand shop just a week after the victim’s death. Fellow residents told police of frequent beatings, painting a picture of relentless abuse.

Campbell was finally arrested on 11 January and charged the next day. A post-mortem revealed multiple historic injuries, with the final assault proving fatal.

In a heart-wrenching statement, Gordon’s sister Merion Wood said: “Gordon was much loved and his death has completely destroyed our family. We thank the police for their efforts at bringing his murderer to justice and pray no other family has to suffer as we have.”
