President Bola Tinubu has issued a heartfelt tribute to Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the revered Afenifere leader, as he marks his remarkable 99th birthday.
In a statement released today, President Tinubu extolled the life and legacy of Pa Fasoranti, celebrating his extraordinary contributions to Nigeria’s public service, education, and political landscape.
“I rejoice with the family, political associates, and friends of our dear father, leader, and patriarch, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in celebrating his remarkable journey of 99 years on earth,” President Tinubu began, offering a special note of gratitude to the elder statesman.
“Baba has enjoyed extraordinary grace from God in attaining this age. Even when he appears frail due to old age, his mind remains active and sharp.”
Pa Fasoranti, a figure synonymous with integrity and progressivism, has dedicated his life to serving Nigeria. With a career that began in education, Pa Fasoranti taught and served as a principal, showing an unwavering commitment to public service and community development.
After retiring from the classroom, he established Omolere Nursery School and Akure High School, both of which stand today as enduring monuments to his dedication to the betterment of society.
“His career as a teacher, principal, and educationist reflects his commitment to public service and community development,” Tinubu noted.
“After retirement, he established Omolere Nursery School and Akure High School. Both schools still stand today as monuments to his outstanding legacy as a school administrator,” he said.
He said Pa Fasoranti’s influence in Nigerian politics is no less impressive as his political journey is deeply rooted in the Yoruba ideals of honour, integrity, and progressivism.
“A steadfast ally of the legendary Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he became a key member of the Action Group and later a prominent figure in the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN),” he said.
Tinubu commended Pa Fasoranti’s steadfast dedication to the advancement of the nation, particularly during his tenure as Commissioner of Finance in Ondo State from 1979 to 1983.
“As Commissioner of Finance in the government of Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, Baba Fasoranti’s distinguished tenure ensured sound fiscal management and the faithful implementation of the UPN’s cardinal programmes—free education, free healthcare, rural development, and sustainable employment,” Tinubu said, reflecting on Pa Fasoranti’s invaluable contribution to the state.
In a country often beset by political upheavals, Tinubu said Pa Fasoranti stood firm in his commitment to democratic ideals.
“During the dark days of military dictatorship under General Sani Abacha, Pa Fasoranti and his Afenifere comrades played a critical role in resisting tyranny,” he added.
Tinubu praised his resilience, saying, “Baba and his colleagues’ resilience inspired and strengthened us, the younger ones.”
President Tinubu, who has known Pa Fasoranti for decades, described him as “dependable, graceful, and a model of exemplary leadership.”
“I remain deeply grateful for his blessings, unflinching support, and his belief in my vision for our country,” Tinubu reflected, recalling his visit to Pa Fasoranti’s residence in Akure when he first decided to run for the presidency.
The President also expressed his happiness that Pa Fasoranti is alive to witness the strides Nigeria is making toward economic revival.
“I am happy he is alive to see the work we are doing to revamp our economy and set Nigeria on the path of sustainable economic growth and development.”
As Nigeria celebrates Pa Fasoranti’s life of service, President Tinubu called on Nigerians to draw inspiration from his example.
“As we reflect on Baba Fasoranti’s life of service at age 99 and commitment to the public good today, may we find the courage to do the right things to better our people and the country.”
Concluding the tribute, President Tinubu expressed his deep appreciation, saying, “Happy birthday to our dear leader and father. May our communities never lack wise elders such as Baba Fasoranti.”
