Ekiti: 5 scavengers docked for unlawful possession of iron rods, vehicle parts

Five scavengers have been arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged unlawful possession of iron rods and vehicle parts.

The defendants, Yahu Abdullahi, 35, Muhammadu Yahuza, 28, Muhammadu Rabiu, 18, Saminu Umar, 23, and Abdul Isaha, 22, were arraigned on a one-count charge of unlawful possession of iron rods

The Prosecutor, Insp Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on May 9 at about 8:00 p.m. at a flyover construction site in Ado-Ekiti.

Oriyomi said that the defendants had in their possession iron rods, copper wires, vehicle parts and iron materials suspected to have been stolen.

He said that the offence contravened Section 345 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor urged the court for to adjourn the case to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them.

Counsel to the defendants, Mr Oluwafemi Alabi, urged the court to grant the defendants bail, with a promise that they would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abayomi Adeosun, in his ruling, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N10,000 each, with one surety each in like sum.

Adeosun adjourned the case till June 3 for hearing.
