President Bola Tinubu on Thursday convened an emergency security meeting with the nation’s top military and police leadership at the State House, Abuja, as violence escalates across parts of northern Nigeria.

The meeting comes amid renewed bloodshed in Plateau, Benue, and Borno states, where hundreds have reportedly been killed in recent weeks.

It also follows Tinubu’s recent directive for the rapid deployment of forest guard units across 1,129 forests nationwide, a move aimed at curbing worsening insecurity.

In attendance are Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, among other senior security officials.

Though the presidency has yet to release official details of the meeting, it is expected to centre on strategies to contain the surge in violent attacks and restore stability to troubled regions.

The high-level engagement comes just days before President Tinubu departs for Rome to attend the inauguration mass of Pope Leo XIV, following an invitation from the Vatican.

As pressure mounts on the federal government to rein in violence and restore public confidence, Thursday’s security meeting signals a renewed urgency from the presidency to confront Nigeria’s deepening security crisis head-on.
