Popular Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie has shared deeply personal details about a major health challenge she faced, revealing she will be on medication for the rest of her life.
In a now-viral video featuring veteran actress Joke Silva, Mercy disclosed that she experienced a cancer scare which led to the surgical removal of her thyroid.
The actress described the experience as one of the most difficult periods of her life, particularly because her youngest child was just six months old at the time.
“I had a cancer scare, and I had my thyroid removed,” she revealed. “It was like a journey for us because we have kids, and my lastborn was six months old at that time. My husband and I kept saying, ‘We have to understand that this is the new us. Let’s get the surgery done.’”
Following the operation, doctors informed her that she would require lifelong medication—a treatment with notable side effects.
“They told me I can’t miss my medication and explained the side effects,” she added. “I’m now at a place of acceptance, trying to reconcile everything—including the changes in my body. This is where we are now. Let’s grow from here and find comfort in this new normal.”
Mercy Johnson’s openness has drawn widespread support and praise, with many applauding her courage in sharing such a vulnerable chapter of her life.
