President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson, two British-Nigerians recently sworn in as mayors in London.
He described their rise as a proud moment for Nigeria and a testament to the excellence of its diaspora community.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the two for upholding the values of integrity, hard work, and public service, which he said continue to define the global image of Nigerians abroad.
Bright, 29, made history as the youngest-ever Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, capping seven years of dedicated service that began when she was elected the borough’s youngest Labour councillor at just 22.
Jackson, on his part, has become the first Nigerian-born Mayor of Islington since the borough was created in 1900, rising swiftly through the ranks after his 2022 election as councillor and subsequent appointment as Chair of Islington’s Homes and Communities Committee in 2023.
President Tinubu described their success as an inspiration to young Nigerians everywhere, urging them to emulate Bright and Jackson’s commitment to excellence and civic duty.
“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I extend warm congratulations to Mayors Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson. Your achievement reflects the growing impact of Nigerians across the globe and underscores the strength of our people when given the opportunity to lead. I am confident you will serve your communities with honour and distinction,” the President stated.
