A 38-year-old man, Suleiman Olapade, who allegedly assaulted two policemen on duty, on Friday, appeared before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The defendant was arraigned on a two-count charge of causing breach of peace and assault to which he, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, Esther Adesulu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 15 at Abule Ado area of Ojo.
Adesulu said that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely cause breach of public peace by engaging hoodlums to fight two police officers on duty in the area.
She stated that following a disagreement, the defendant resorted to assaulting the police officers – Abigail Igbodo and Emeka Nwanmeme – and obstructing the performance of their lawful duties
Adesulu said that the defendant collected handcuffs from the officers and used same to inflict injury on them.
She further stated that Olapade tore Nwanmeme’s uniform in the course of performing his lawful duty.
The offences, according to her, contravene the provisions of sections 168 and 174 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Magistrate, Mrs Funke Ogun, however, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000, with two sureties in like sum.
Ogun adjourned the case till June 2 for mention.
