Thirteen-year-old Michelle Ibidapo, a student of The Grange School, Ikeja, representing Team Oyo, has claimed the gold medal in the women’s 1,500m freestyle event at the ongoing Ogun 2024 National Sports Festival.
Michelle, who was discovered at the National Youth Games in Asaba, has quickly risen through the ranks of Nigeria’s sporting scene to emerge as one of the country’s brightest young swimming talents.
Speaking after her impressive victory in Shagamu, Michelle said: “Coming into this competition, I was focused. I had my mind on winning a medal, even though I wasn’t sure what colour. During the last lap, I reminded myself to stay focused, and by the end, it turned into gold.”
Her triumph not only showcases her determination and talent but also underscores the impact of the Youth Games in unearthing promising athletes and offering them platforms to grow and excel at the national level.
