Manchester City have confirmed their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League following a 2-0 win over Fulham, marking their 18th consecutive victory against the Cottagers across all competitions.
Requiring only a single point to guarantee their return to Europe’s elite club tournament, City started the match with intent rather than caution.
Despite a bright beginning, they struggled to convert possession into clear-cut chances, echoing their recent away performance against Southampton.
The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Matheus Nunes surged down the right flank. Although Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno initially denied his lob, İlkay Gündoğan was alert to volley the rebound spectacularly off the underside of the crossbar, giving City the lead.
This goal provided much-needed comfort as City pursued a top-five finish, but they remained vulnerable. Shortly after the restart, Fulham nearly equalised through Harry Wilson, whose close-range effort was expertly saved by Ederson.
According to Flashscore, City then appeared to retreat, allowing Fulham to apply sustained pressure. Tom Cairney, in his farewell appearance for Fulham, narrowly missed a curling effort that threatened to level the score before halftime.
The second half followed a similar rhythm, with Fulham pressing aggressively and creating several chances. A notable moment came when Andreas Pereira’s shot, deflected off Manuel Akanji, was denied.
Raúl Jiménez also squandered a golden opportunity, beating Ederson to the ball but failing to lift it over the goalkeeper into an open net.
Fulham’s resistance was ultimately undone by a penalty awarded after Saša Lukić fouled Gündoğan in the box. Erling Haaland confidently converted the spot-kick, putting the game beyond doubt. With Champions League qualification secured, City eased off and allowed Kevin De Bruyne a final appearance before his anticipated departure.
While City celebrate securing their top-five finish and European football next season, Fulham can take pride in setting a club record for Premier League points this campaign.
