What began as a jubilant day of celebration in Liverpool ended in horror on Sunday evening after a car collided with multiple pedestrians in the city centre, triggering a swift and large-scale emergency response.
According to a statement from Merseyside Police, the incident occurred just after 6:00pm on Water Street, not far from where thousands had gathered earlier in the day to celebrate Liverpool FC’s Premier League trophy parade.
Emergency services descended on the scene within minutes. Police, paramedics, and the North West Air Ambulance quickly established a cordon around the area as injured victims were treated and transported.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion and distress, with at least three people visibly injured and rushed away for urgent care.
“The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained,” Merseyside Police confirmed, adding that investigations are currently underway to determine the circumstances behind the collision.
The North West Air Ambulance landed on-site to assist, underscoring the severity of the incident. The number of people injured has not yet been officially confirmed.
Liverpool City Council issued a brief statement acknowledging the tragedy. “We are currently liaising with Merseyside Police regarding an incident on Water Street in the city centre,” a spokesperson said.
The incident has drawn national attention. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the crash as “appalling,” offering support to victims and gratitude to first responders.
“My thoughts are with all those injured or affected,” he said. “I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident.”
As of now, there is no indication whether the crash was accidental or deliberate. Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid the area while the investigation is ongoing.
