A 53-year-old man has been arrested following a disturbing incident during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade on Sunday evening, where a vehicle ploughed into a crowd of supporters in the city centre.

According to a statement issued by Merseyside Police, the suspect, described as a white British man from the Liverpool area, was taken into custody as investigations into the incident continue.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether he was the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision on Water Street.

In a statement issued at 8:01 p.m., Merseyside Police urged the public to avoid speculation while investigations are ongoing.

“We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre,” the spokesperson said.

“Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.”

Police also appealed to the public to refrain from circulating graphic content online and instead share any footage or information directly with authorities via social media handle @MerPolCC, by calling 101 with log reference 784, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Liverpool FC has responded to the incident, expressing concern for those affected.

A club spokesperson confirmed they are in direct contact with Merseyside Police.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident,” the statement read.

“We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident.”

The incident cast a dark shadow over what had been a jubilant celebration, and investigators are expected to release further details as enquiries progress.
