The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kano Directorate, secured the conviction on Wednesday before Justice Simone Amobeda.

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has sentenced popular TikTok personality, Murja Kunya, to six months in prison for abusing the Nigerian currency.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kano Directorate, secured the conviction on Wednesday before Justice Simone Amobeda.

Kunya was found guilty of spraying Naira notes in a hotel room at Tahir Guest Palace, an act which contravenes the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act that prohibits the abuse and mutilation of the Naira.

Initially arrested in January 2025, the social media influencer was released on administrative bail but failed to appear in court when summoned, prompting a manhunt by the anti-graft agency. She was eventually re-arrested on March 16, 2025, after weeks of surveillance and investigation.

During her arraignment on May 20, Kunya pleaded guilty to the amended one-count charge brought against her by the EFCC.

Justice Amobeda, in his ruling, handed down a six-month prison sentence.
