The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed the elimination of over 20 armed terrorists and the destruction of more than 21 motorcycles in an airstrike operation conducted on May 31 in Zamfara State.

Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, disclosed in a statement on Monday that the air interdiction took place in the southern axis of Mai-Galma, within Maru Local Government Area.

According to Ejodame, the operation was launched following credible intelligence reports indicating that a large group of terrorists was mobilising to launch coordinated attacks on nearby vulnerable communities.

The same intelligence revealed that the armed group had earlier killed several farmers and abducted civilians, including women and children.

“In response, aircraft under Operation FANSAR YAMMA were deployed for armed reconnaissance and possible rescue. On arrival, the aircraft sighted over 30 motorcycles carrying armed terrorists heading into a forest. The terrorists opened fire, prompting precision strikes that neutralised dozens and destroyed several motorcycles,” the statement read.

Ground troops were quickly mobilised to the area and confirmed the successful neutralisation of over 20 terrorists and the destruction of enemy logistics.

However, Ejodame noted that two local vigilantes lost their lives during the operation, while two others sustained injuries.

He expressed the NAF’s condolences and praised the bravery of the vigilantes, reaffirming the force’s commitment to collaborating with local communities for lasting peace and security.

Efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the kidnapped civilians reportedly taken into the adjoining forest areas.

The Air Force also reiterated its commitment to upholding strict rules of engagement and international humanitarian law.

All operations, Ejodame stressed, are conducted in line with the NAF Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan (CHMRAP), which prioritises the protection of innocent lives.

“As investigations continue, the NAF assures Nigerians that it will intensify pressure on criminal elements and take all necessary steps to safeguard civilian populations,” he added.
