The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a strong warning against the use of fake social media accounts spreading false information about its officials.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa on Friday, spoke from Abuja following the emergence of a fraudulent Facebook account impersonating the Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed.
Ebienfa explained that the fake account has been used to disseminate false information, promise contracts, solicit assistance, and offer rewards to unsuspecting members of the public.
“The Ministry firmly disassociates itself from this impersonation and urges the public to disregard any messages from the fake account, which is not an official channel,” he said. He also clarified that Ambassador Ahmed does not operate or own any social media accounts.
The spokesperson advised the public to avoid engaging with individuals or groups behind such deceptive schemes, which are harmful and fraudulent.
He added that the ministry is collaborating with security agencies and Meta, the parent company of Facebook, to investigate and shut down the fake account.
