Polish football icon Robert Lewandowski has temporarily stepped away from international duty, citing a breakdown in trust with national team head coach Michał Probierz.
The 36-year-old Barcelona striker, who has scored 85 goals in 158 appearances for Poland, announced the decision via social media on Sunday. His message was unequivocal: he will not represent the national team “until” Probierz is no longer in charge.
“Considering the circumstances and the loss of trust in the coach of the Polish National Team, I decided to resign from playing… until he is the coach,” Lewandowski wrote.
“I hope that I will be able to play for the best fans in the world again.”

The move sparked backlash from Lewandowski’s supporters and fuelled existing tensions between fans and the coaching staff.
Despite his legendary status in Polish football, Lewandowski had recently faced criticism for missing international fixtures. His decision to step down, albeit conditionally, has now sent shockwaves through Poland and the wider football community.
Lewandowski, who debuted for Poland in 2008, has been the face of Polish football for nearly two decades.
At club level, he has enjoyed an illustrious career, winning Bundesliga titles with both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich—where he also secured a Champions League trophy in 2020. Since his 2022 move to Barcelona, he has added two LaLiga titles to his name.
While the Polish Football Association has yet to issue a formal response, Lewandowski’s announcement has intensified scrutiny of Probierz’s leadership and left fans questioning the direction of the national team just months before key international fixtures.
