A tragic incident has occurred in Kogi State, where a retired Army Major, Joe Ajayi, 76, died in the custody of his kidnappers despite his family paying a ransom of N10 million for his rescue.

According to reports, Major Ajayi was kidnapped on May 21, 2025, at his residence in Odo-Ape, Kabba-Bunu local government area, by gunmen who shot sporadically. The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N50 million, which the family struggled to pay.

As a result, Major Ajayi’s health deteriorated due to lack of access to medication. The kidnappers refused to provide him with his medication without an additional payment, which the family could not afford.

When the kidnappers realized that Major Ajayi’s condition was critical, they reduced the ransom to N10 million. The family, believing he was still alive, paid the ransom and was directed to a location where they would find him. However, upon arrival, they discovered his lifeless body.

The retired army officer’s remains have been deposited at the Kabba Specialist Hospital mortuary. This incident highlights the growing concern over kidnapping in Kogi State, where several prominent individuals, including a first-class monarch, Oba James Dada Ogunyanda, have been abducted in recent times.

The state governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that efforts are underway to rid the state of criminal elements. Major Ajayi was a respected member of his community, having served as Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Kabba/Bunu Chapter.
