Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has sent a clear message to fellow artistes in the music industry, urging them not to sign upcoming talents simply for clout.
In a recent interview with media personality VJ Adams, the award-winning vocalist emphasized the importance of genuine passion when it comes to managing and investing in new artists.
“I can sign an artist, but I think it’s not fair when an artiste signs another artist just as a milestone. For that artist, it’s just a passion project, not necessarily something to accomplish a real goal. But that’s someone’s life and dream,” she said.
Simi stressed that only those with a real interest in the music business should take on the responsibility of signing artistes. “Whether or not the artist is thriving at the moment, whether the song you thought would blow didn’t blow—are you still willing to keep going? That’s the kind of commitment it requires.”
Reflecting on her own experience as a signed artiste, Simi shared: “That was the way I saw myself when I was getting signed—‘How do you see me? Am I just a box you’re ticking or is it as important to you as it is to me?’”
