2025 Democracy Day: Lagos Police set strict rules for June 12 protests

Quick Read

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has met with representatives of 15 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) ahead of the Democracy Day celebrations and planned protests scheduled for Thursday, June 12.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos.

According to Hundeyin, all groups present at the meeting agreed to prioritize public safety and security during their activities to mark Democracy Day. He noted that while half of the CSOs indicated they would celebrate the day peacefully, the others planned to hold peaceful and orderly protests.

The groups intending to protest agreed to assemble at Ikeja Under-Bridge before proceeding together to Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota, which was designated as the only approved protest venue.

“It was agreed that no protests would take place outside the designated venue at Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota,” Hundeyin stated.

Discussions during the meeting focused on ensuring peace, law, and order throughout Democracy Day events, with CSOs pledging to brief other non-attending organisations on the meeting’s resolutions and encourage full compliance.

The meeting also emphasized the importance of adhering to all security measures to protect lives and property across Lagos State. Hundeyin added that the CSOs were cautioned to ensure that protests remain peaceful and are not hijacked by miscreants or troublemakers. They were also advised against actions that could disrupt traffic, public peace, or other lawful activities during the national celebration.

The Lagos State Police Command reassured residents of its commitment to providing adequate security throughout the festivities and urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and celebrate Democracy Day without fear.

Hundeyin also advised residents to stay vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities or individuals to the nearest police station.
