The Federal Ministry of Education has received a petition titled “Petition to Defend Yoruba History from Ethnic Distortion in Nigerian Textbooks,” sent by the group Concerned Citizens of Yoruba Origin and Supporters of Truth, led by Otunba Abayomi Odunowo.

The petition complains about a history textbook written by Tony and Ijeoma Duru and published by Tones Publishers. It says the book makes false claims about the origin of Ile-Ife, which could cause confusion and harm unity among Nigerians.

We want to clearly state that this textbook was not written, approved, or recommended by the Federal Ministry of Education. It is not on the list of books allowed for use in public primary or junior secondary schools. The Ministry has no link to the publication.

We thank all those who raised the alarm and understand the concerns about such misleading information. However, it is important to know that the Ministry only has control over materials it officially approves.

Books approved by the Ministry go through a strict process to make sure they meet national education standards. These books help students learn better, support literacy, and promote equal and quality education across Nigeria.

Still, because this matter touches on education, culture, and national unity, the Ministry will work with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and other agencies to look into the issue properly.

We will take all necessary steps to correct any false information and make sure the matter is handled fairly and respectfully.

The Federal Ministry of Education is fully committed to providing quality education that respects all cultures and helps build peace, understanding, and national progress.
