Italy set to name Gattuso substantive head coach

Quick Read

According to Romano, negotiations between Gattuso and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) have reached an advanced stage, with only a few final details left to agree upon before the deal is completed.

Gennaro Gattuso, a former midfielder for AC Milan and ex-coach of top clubs like Napoli and Valencia, is reportedly on the verge of being appointed as the new head coach of the Italian national football team. This was revealed by well-known football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Saturday.

According to Romano, negotiations between Gattuso and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) have reached an advanced stage, with only a few final details left to agree upon before the deal is completed.

“Gennaro Gattuso is close to becoming the new Italy head coach. The agreement is almost done — just final details remain,” Romano posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Gattuso is widely respected for his fiery playing career and no-nonsense coaching style.

He led Napoli to a Coppa Italia title in 2020 and has managed several clubs across Europe, including AC Milan, Olympique Marseille, and Valencia.

His leadership qualities and deep passion for the game have made him a fan favourite both on and off the pitch.

Gattuso is expected to take over from current manager Luciano Spalletti, who led Italy through recent international fixtures. If confirmed, this move marks a new chapter for the Azzurri as they prepare for upcoming competitions, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and other major tournaments.

The Italian Football Federation is expected to make an official announcement in the coming days once all negotiations are finalized.
