IGP storms Benue after mass killings, declares total war on terrorists

He assured the governor and people of Benue of the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice and restoring peace to the affected communities.

The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Monday paid a working visit to Benue State to assess the security situation and commiserate with the state government and residents following recent attacks that claimed several lives.

Accompanied by top police brass, including the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, DIG Yakubu Kwazhi; DIG Adebola Ayinde Hamzat of Logistics & Supply; AIG Zone 4, Zachariah Fera; and CP Special Investigation Squad, Abayomi Shogunle, the IGP met with Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia at the Government House in Makurdi.

During the visit, Egbetokun expressed deep sorrow over the killings, describing them as “senseless acts of terrorism.”

He assured the governor and people of Benue of the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice and restoring peace to the affected communities.

Governor Alia, in response, commended the IGP for the continued support and timely deployment of tactical resources.

The IGP also visited Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area, one of the hardest-hit areas. There, alongside the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, he toured the scene of destruction and engaged with local leaders.

He pledged enhanced security presence and reaffirmed the Force’s resolve to protect lives and property in the region.

To bolster security efforts, the IGP directed the immediate deployment of additional tactical units and assets to Benue State.

DIG Yakubu Kwazhi has been tasked with overseeing the intensified operations aimed at restoring calm and preventing further attacks.

Concluding his visit, the IGP addressed officers and men of the Benue State Police Command at the Officers’ Mess, State Headquarters, Makurdi. He assured them of improved welfare and logistics support as they confront ongoing security challenges.
