In a move to improve user security and streamline account recovery, WhatsApp has introduced a new feature encouraging users to add and verify their email addresses.

The Meta-owned messaging platform announced the update as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance user protection and improve access in the event of lockouts.

According to WhatsApp, users can now head to Settings > Account > Email address to securely link an email to their profile. Once verified, this email will serve as an additional layer of protection, especially helpful if users forget their PIN or lose access to their phones.

A prompt within the app reads: “Add your email for extra security . Let’s make your account even more secure. Add and verify your email address to easily and safely log back in if you’re ever locked out.”

Cybersecurity experts have welcomed the development, saying the new feature aligns with best practices in digital identity management.

“Adding an email recovery option is a smart step for any communication platform. It minimizes risk and ensures users are not permanently locked out of their accounts,” said Lanre Adebayo, a digital security analyst.

The feature is gradually rolling out across all devices, with users encouraged to update their apps to the latest version to access it.

The introduction of the email recovery feature reinforces WhatsApp’s commitment to enhancing user convenience and security, particularly as digital platforms continue to evolve in an increasingly complex online environment.
