In a fiercely contested FIFA Club World Cup match, Brazilian side Botafogo RJ pulled off a shock 1–0 win over French giants and European champions, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
Igor Jesus’ first-half strike proved decisive at a packed stadium attended by 53,699 fans in the United States.
The only goal of the match came in the 36th minute, when Jefferson Savarino set up Jesus inside the box. His deflected effort wrong-footed goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, leaving the Italian stranded as the ball found the back of the net.
Despite the narrow scoreline, the match was packed with drama, intensity, and missed opportunities—especially from the PSG camp.
Vitinha, Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Kang-In Lee all came close, but Botafogo’s defence, marshalled by standout goalkeeper John Victor, remained resolute.
In the dying minutes, PSG mounted a relentless push. Kvaratskhelia and Lee both squandered golden chances deep into stoppage time, while Vitinha’s long-range effort in the 94th minute whistled just over the bar, denying the French side a late equaliser.
PSG also had a goal ruled out for offside in the 79th minute, when Bradley Barcola thought he had levelled the score, only for the assistant referee’s flag to cut celebrations short.
The match featured multiple cooling breaks due to high temperatures and saw heavy squad rotations from both managers.
PSG coach Luis Enrique made a flurry of second-half substitutions, including bringing on Nuno Mendes, Joao Neves, and Fabian Ruiz, in an effort to change the tide.
While PSG enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and goal attempts, it was Botafogo’s organisation, discipline, and one moment of attacking brilliance that secured the unlikely win.
