Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has committed over N2 billion to the reconstruction and modernisation of the Farm Centre GSM Market, following a devastating fire incident that occurred two weeks ago.

Fresh from his return from the Hajj pilgrimage, Yusuf visited the affected market last Wednesday, where he was received by traders and market leaders.

During the visit, he announced an ambitious redevelopment plan aimed at not only restoring the damaged sections but transforming the entire market into a world-class commercial hub.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor pledged that the intervention would address the immediate aftermath of the fire outbreak while also aligning with a broader vision to expand and upgrade the market’s infrastructure.

“The plan involves rebuilding affected sections, expanding the market through the acquisition of additional land, and establishing a fully-equipped fire station within the premises,” the statement noted.

“It also includes the installation of solar-powered streetlights, construction of a pedestrian bridge for safe access, development of drainage systems to prevent flooding, and rehabilitation of surrounding access roads.”

Yusuf described the move as a crucial part of his administration’s commitment to economic revitalisation and youth empowerment.

According to him, the state government aims to reposition the Farm Centre GSM Market as an international trading destination with connections to neighbouring countries, thereby boosting cross-border commerce and regional economic integration.

To ensure sustainable operations and accountability, the governor also announced plans to establish a dedicated management structure for the market.

He further called on traders to work closely with security agencies to tackle the growing challenge of phone snatching and petty thefts around the market.

Emphasising the role of vocational education in curbing unemployment and crime, Governor Yusuf reiterated that the state’s 26 vocational training centres will continue to serve as platforms for youth skill acquisition and job creation.

In his remarks, Comrade Jamilu Gama, Chairman of the GSM Market, thanked the governor for the swift response and substantial financial commitment.

He noted that the intervention had boosted traders’ morale following the heavy losses incurred in the fire.

The Farm Centre GSM Market, situated in central Kano, comprises 20 plazas and serves as a major hub for mobile phones, electronic gadgets, and related services.

With a workforce of over 39,000 young people, it is considered one of the largest informal tech markets in Northern Nigeria.

Governor Yusuf’s visit and funding pledge have drawn widespread praise, with many stakeholders viewing the project as a bold and strategic move to restore livelihoods, rebuild infrastructure, and promote youth inclusion in Kano’s economic recovery.
