The quartet was arrested on June 15 following a report of rail line vandalism in Zakirai town, Gabasawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The Chief Magistrate Court No. 9 in Gyadi-Gyadi, Kano, has reserved judgment until July 1, 2025, in a high-profile railway vandalism case involving four suspects.

The accused-Mukhter Muhammed (30), Abdullahi Musa (21), Sa’idu Yushe’u (26), and Salisu Shuaibu (24)-were arraigned on June 19 by the Kano Railway Police Command on charges of conspiracy, mischief, and theft.

The quartet was arrested on June 15 following a report of rail line vandalism in Zakirai town, Gabasawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

Upon arraignment, all four pleaded guilty to the charges and were promptly convicted.

However, the court delayed sentencing to allow time for a thorough review of the recovered exhibits before delivering its final ruling.

While Kano awaits judgment, law enforcement agencies across Nigeria have continued to clamp down on railway vandals.

In Ilorin, Kwara State, police are investigating a significant breach involving the theft of critical railway components.

On June 11, a staff member of the Ilorin Railway Station, Mr. Adesina Fabumi, reported the theft of 56 fish plates, bolts, and nuts from the tracks near Idi-Ose Village-key materials used to secure rail lines.

Following swift investigations led by Inspector Oniwara Babatunde, police arrested Wasiu Musa of Ajia Village on June 12. Musa confessed to the crime and implicated another suspect, Abdullahi Salman, who remains at large.

Further progress came on June 28 when police apprehended Usman Bashir of You Area, Ilorin. Authorities recovered a stash of stolen rail materials from him, including 33 fish plates, 33 bolts and nuts, 80 AB & K fasteners, and 38 additional nuts.

Inspector Oniwara confirmed that Musa is cooperating with investigators to identify and arrest the remaining accomplices.

In a separate incident in Gombe State, Railway Police intercepted a vehicle transporting suspected stolen steel rail sleepers. Two suspects were taken into custody and are currently assisting with the investigation.

Reacting to the wave of vandalism, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, condemned the attacks on critical national infrastructure.

He reaffirmed the NRC’s commitment to protecting railway assets and warned that those involved in vandalism would face the full weight of the law.

“These acts not only endanger lives but also undermine national development. We will ensure that perpetrators are prosecuted to the fullest extent,” Opeifa stated.

As investigations continue across multiple states, authorities are intensifying efforts to crack down on the vandalism of railway infrastructure, seen as a growing threat to Nigeria’s transport and economic stability.
