Iran has confirmed that it fired several missiles at a U.S. military base in Qatar on Monday.

According to Iranian authorities, the attack was a response to the U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites over the weekend.

At least 10 missiles targeted Qatar, and one missile was fired toward Iraq, according to Israeli sources. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the number of missiles matched the number of bombs used by the U.S. in its earlier attack.

In a statement, Iran said the missiles hit a base far from civilian areas in Qatar and did not endanger the people or cities in the country. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard also confirmed that Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military base in the region, was the target.

Iran declared the strike as a strong warning, saying it would respond to any threat against its land, security, and sovereignty.

Qatar’s government reported that its air defense systems intercepted the missiles. There were no injuries or deaths. The country condemned the attack and urged all parties to return to diplomatic talks.

The White House was monitoring the situation closely. President Trump was meeting with top national security officials when the attack occurred. He had earlier warned that any Iranian retaliation would bring a stronger U.S. response.

Explosions were heard in Doha, the capital of Qatar, and videos showed air defense systems in action. Qatar temporarily closed its airspace earlier in the day as a precaution.

Al Udeid Air Base has seen many of its personnel and aircraft moved out in recent weeks due to rising tensions. The U.S., U.K., and China have advised their citizens in Qatar to stay indoors for safety.

This incident follows the U.S. operation over the weekend, named Operation Midnight Hammer, in which American forces bombed multiple Iranian nuclear and military sites. The move has led to increased fears of wider conflict in the region.
