Graduates Turn Givers: IBSS ’95 set leads alumni support drive with landmark projects

Quick Read

The occasion, which doubled as a reunion and a homecoming, brought together members of the 1995 class along with several of their former teachers.

In an inspiring show of gratitude and unity, the 1995 graduating set of Ijeshatedo Boys Secondary School (IBSS), Lagos, has given back to their alma mater in grand style by renovating and furnishing an entire block of classrooms.

The newly refurbished facility was officially commissioned on Saturday, May 31, 2025, during a vibrant reunion event held at the school’s premises.

The occasion, which doubled as a reunion and a homecoming, brought together members of the 1995 class along with several of their former teachers.

The atmosphere was rich with nostalgia, laughter, and reflections on shared experiences — all underlined by a renewed sense of purpose and community.

Speaking during the ceremony, Mr. Feyisayo Elijah Adeniyi, Secretary of the IBSS 1995 set, said the initiative was born out of a desire to give back to the institution that shaped their early lives.

“We reunited last year with two clear goals: to reconnect as brothers and to contribute meaningfully to our school’s progress. Today, we have taken a bold step toward fulfilling those objectives,” he said.

Vice President of the association, Mr. Muyiwa Adesanya, explained that the idea took root when some members visited the school and inquired about its most pressing needs.

“The management identified an abandoned classroom block,” he said. “We took it up as our mission — to renovate, revamp, and transform it into a conducive learning environment.”

Another member of the set, Prince Shola Adebowale, hailed the project as a major milestone.

“This is what alumni associations are meant to do — to uplift and support the schools that once nurtured us. Mobilizing support wasn’t easy, but the outcome makes it all worthwhile.”

Mr. Paul Ononiwu, also a member of the class, called the project a dream come true. “For years, I wanted our set to make a lasting impact. Today, we’ve done just that — and I’m proud to be part of this legacy.”

The school’s principal, Pastor Olugbenro Daniel, was full of praise. “This is a trailblazing effort,” he said. “No other graduating set has ever undertaken a project of this scale in our 44-year history. The upgraded block will go a long way in improving the quality of learning here.”

Similarly, Mr. Ayano Adeniyi, Principal of the Junior Secondary School section, commended the quality of the renovation. “The facility is top-notch,” he said. “We are grateful and will ensure it’s put to effective use.”

The significance of this gesture was not lost on the community. Considering the school’s first set graduated 40 years ago, it is particularly remarkable that the 1995 class — which graduated just a decade later — has achieved what neither their predecessors nor successors could.

“The ten graduating sets before us didn’t do this, and the 29 sets after us haven’t. That speaks volumes,” one alumnus proudly noted. “We are not just a one-time success — we are intentional, practical, and committed to excellence.”

The day ended in celebration with group photographs, music, dancing, and refreshments. Teachers and students alike shared touching memories, strengthening bonds that had stood the test of time.

The group also used the opportunity to invite all members of the IBSS 1995 set to join their social network — a vibrant platform designed to foster business connections, mutual support, learning, discussions on national policy, and yes — some well-deserved fun and banter.

As one member quipped with a smile, “It can’t be about seriousness all the time joh!”
