Tension has hit the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections, as angry protesters stormed the party’s National Secretariat in Wuse 2, Abuja, and forcefully pulled down the main gate.
The protest began on Tuesday while the party’s National Working Committee was holding a meeting inside the headquarters. As of the time of reporting, the exact reason for the protest remained unclear.
However, a source within the party said the unrest may be connected to a plan to install former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as a leader within the party. El-Rufai recently joined the SDP after leaving the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Meanwhile, journalists covering the incident were reportedly assaulted by security officers attached to the party’s secretariat.
Just a day earlier, El-Rufai had told Arise Television that he is determined to stop President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from securing a second term in 2027.
He also claimed to be working closely with other political figures to form a strong coalition against the current government.
PM News recalls that a new political party, All Democratic Alliance (ADA) was recently formed by members of the opposition and the Kaduna born politician was also part of it.
However, SDP is yet to show interest in aligning with ADA
