The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 has reached a critical phase, with ten teams now confirmed for the Round of 16 following the latest round of group stage matches played on Tuesday and into the early hours of Wednesday.
Among the standout results was Benfica’s impressive 1-0 victory over Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
The only goal of the match came in the first half, courtesy of Andreas Schjelderup, whose strike was enough to send the Portuguese club through to the knockout stage while handing Bayern a rare defeat in the competition.
Chelsea also booked their place in the last 16 after a commanding 3-0 win against African champions ES Tunis.
The English side, under new manager Enzo Maresca, put on a dominant performance with goals from Tosin Adarabioyo, Liam Delap, and Tyrique George. Their comprehensive display ensured their qualification and sent a strong message to other contenders.
With their victories, Chelsea and Benfica joined other teams that had already secured qualification, including Inter Miami from the United States, Brazilian sides Palmeiras, Flamengo, and Botafogo, French champions Paris Saint-Germain, Italian powerhouse Juventus, and reigning European champions Manchester City. Bayern Munich, despite their loss to Benfica, had already done enough in earlier matches to progress.
The tournament, which brings together top clubs from different continents, is intensifying as more teams battle for the remaining spots in the Round of 16.
Fans across the globe are closely watching as the competition moves towards its knockout stages, promising thrilling encounters and world-class football.
