The Federal Government has finally delivered on its long-standing promise to the 1994 Super Eagles team by giving houses to 94 players who helped Nigeria win the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.

This was announced in Abuja by Pemi Temitope, Director of Public Building and Housing Development at the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. The announcement came through a statement from Badamasi Haiba, the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations.

During a symbolic ceremony, Temitope presented the letter of allocation to Efan Ekoku—one of the team’s strikers—who was represented by his niece, Lisa Nwagbogun. The houses were allocated across different states in Nigeria, with some players receiving their homes in their home states while others were given theirs in Abuja.

Temitope noted that the government is committed to honouring promises and rewarding those who have made significant contributions to the nation.

“This shows our dedication to keeping promises and appreciating the patriotic efforts of our sports heroes,” he said.

In response, Ekoku, through his niece, expressed appreciation to the government.

“I’m very thankful to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Housing. This means a lot. It shows that promises made can be fulfilled, even years later,” he said.

It’s worth noting that former President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the housing allocations back in 2022 to honour the pledge originally made in 1994.
