Veteran Afrobeats musician Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has called on Nigerians to show more respect and appreciation for music legends, regardless of whether they are still trending or not.
The Akpako Master, in a series of posts on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, expressed disappointment over the way Nigerian music veterans are often dismissed as “outdated” once their time in the limelight has passed.
He compared the Nigerian attitude toward legends with the reverence given to veteran musicians in the Western world, citing stars like Jay-Z and Beyoncé as examples of artists whose legacies are continually honoured.
“I hear people say, ‘Your time don pass!’—and it sounds like brain damage,” he wrote.
“In the West, legends are respected for life. No one calls Jay-Z or Beyoncé outdated. Their impact is honoured.
But here in Africa, especially Nigeria, we’re quick to discard our own. That’s why we believe our ancestors were evil, while Western ancestors are seen as gods.”
