Former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight has opened up about the final moments of late rap legend Tupac Shakur (2Pac), revealing that the artiste begged his mother to let him die.
Speaking exclusively with People Magazine from the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in California—where he is serving a 28-year sentence for a 2015 fatal hit-and-run—Knight claimed that 2Pac was in unbearable pain and asked his mother, Afeni Shakur, to end his suffering.
“The doctors came in and brought him back. And his mom said, ‘Don’t ever do that again. If he’s having complications, don’t touch him. Don’t bring him back. Let him go,’” Knight recounted.
According to Knight, Afeni gave 2Pac some pills to help him pass peacefully. The rapper later died on September 13, 1996, at University Hospital in Las Vegas, from injuries sustained in a drive-by shooting five days earlier.
Suge Knight also revealed that Tupac had expressed his wish to have a grand funeral, attended by rappers who would kiss him from head to toe—just like he described in his song Life Goes On. However, Knight said Afeni chose to cremate her son instead.
“He didn’t want to be cremated,” Knight said, adding that he paid $1 million in cash to an affiliate for the cremation. Even more shockingly, Knight claimed that some of Tupac’s ashes were smoked by his close friends and associates.
“I was probably the only one who didn’t hit him,” Knight laughed, noting that he was on probation at the time and couldn’t risk smoking anything.
Tupac’s death has remained one of the most enduring mysteries and tragedies in hip-hop history. It came during a highly publicized feud between East Coast and West Coast rappers, particularly with The Notorious B.I.G., who was killed in a similar drive-by shooting just six months later, in March 1997.
Although there was no direct evidence linking either rapper’s death to the rivalry, speculation has continued for decades.
In a major update to the case, Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested in September 2023 in connection with Tupac’s murder. He is currently in custody and is expected to face trial in February 2026.
