BREAKING: Nico Williams signs new deal with Athletic Club, snubs Barcelona
Spanish winger, Nico Williams, has signed a new long-term contract with Athletic Club, putting to rest speculations linking him to Barcelona.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano broke the news on Friday, revealing that Williams has penned a fresh deal that will keep him at the Basque club until June 2035.
As part of the new contract, the 21-year-old will earn a higher salary and now has a release clause that is over 50% higher than the previous one, which stood at €58 million.
This development officially ends Barcelona’s interest in the player, as Romano reports the deal is now off due to registration issues at the Catalan club.
Barcelona had been monitoring Williams as a key summer target after his impressive performances for both club and country. But despite recent talks, the Spanish giants were unable to proceed with the deal, forcing the player to commit his future to Athletic Club.
Nico Williams, the younger brother of Iñaki Williams, was one of Spain’s standout performers at the Euro 2024 tournament, and his stock has continued to rise among Europe’s elite.
