A major blow was dealt to Nigeria’s narcotics underworld on Saturday, June 28, as operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested notorious drug kingpin Ajetsibo Emami, infamously known as ‘Warri Kinsman.’

He was arrested during a high-level raid in Ikeja, Lagos.

A statement issued by NDLEA’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Sunday, said the arrest followed a three-day intelligence-led operation that uncovered and dismantled Emami’s sprawling drug network.

Three additional suspects linked to the cartel were also apprehended. NDLEA agents recovered 24 jumbo bags containing 681 pouches of Canadian Loud, a potent variant of cannabis, weighing a total of 414.2 kilograms.

Intelligence reports had earlier revealed that the consignment was being prepared for movement to the Lekki area of Lagos, from where it was to be distributed across the state and other regions of the country.

In a separate interdiction at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, NDLEA operatives intercepted 52 pieces of travellers’ cheques valued at 17.7 million Australian dollars, concealed inside children’s books destined for Malaysia via Turkish Airlines.

The discovery was made at the airport’s export shed on Friday, July 4. A freight agent, Bolarinwa Saheed, was arrested and is being transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation as the cheques are suspected to be counterfeit.

Meanwhile, in Osun State, NDLEA operatives destroyed 24,175 kilograms of skunk cultivated on 9.67 hectares of cannabis farmland located in the Oke-Ila forest, Ikaka. The raid, carried out on Thursday, July 3, led to the arrest of seven suspects: Bunmi Adedapo (41), Adebisi Sodiq (26), Babatunde Gani (22), John Sunday (30), Israel Odabe (29), Solomon Odabe (21), and Prosper Odabe (23).

Further operations in Borno and Kano states led to the seizure of large quantities of psychoactive substances.

In Borno, 167kg of skunk was recovered in Gamboru-Ngala, while along the Zaria-Kano road in Gadar Tamburawa, NDLEA seized 452kg of the same substance. Two suspects, Nasuru Saleh and Mustapha Muhammad, were taken into custody in connection with the haul on Thursday, July 3.
