Just in: Teachers suspend 3-month strike in Abuja
Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have suspended their over three-month-old strike and are set to return to classrooms on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
The FCT chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) confirmed the development in a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.
The union said the decision followed the payment of the new minimum wage and five months’ arrears into teachers’ accounts on Tuesday, July 8.
“All primary school teachers in the FCT are to resume duty on Wednesday,” the union stated.
The strike, which began in March, had paralysed academic activities in FCT primary schools. The NUT said it took the decision to suspend the action after the intervention of the FCT Minister, who met with key stakeholders to resolve the crisis.
As part of the resolution, the government released N16 billion from the Area Councils’ share of Internally Generated Revenue to support the wage payment and cover part of the backlog.
The union said a special committee would be set up within two weeks to harmonise the remaining entitlements and work out sustainable funding.
It, however, warned that it would not hesitate to resume the strike if the government fails to honour its part of the agreement.
While thanking teachers for their patience, the union also appreciated royal fathers, civil society groups, and others who stood by them during the industrial action.
