Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has approved a monthly allowance of N20,000 for all National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who are from the state, no matter where they are serving in Nigeria.
Governor Eno said he was worried about the current economic challenges in the country, adding that young people are the ones suffering the most.
This decision was made during the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held at the Government House in Uyo.
The Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, said the allowance was first given to corps members serving within Akwa Ibom but will now cover all corps members from the state nationwide.
He explained that the payment is part of the Renewed Hope – ARISE Youth Support Initiative to help reduce their living expenses and improve their welfare.
The amount may be reviewed in the future depending on the situation in the country.
Other decisions made at the meeting included the approval to construct a 2.15km dual carriage rigid road and repair a 0.8km flexible road at Itam Industrial Park in Itu Local Government Area. This project aims to improve infrastructure and help the state’s economy grow.
The council also discussed ways to boost the hospitality and tourism sector to increase the state’s income. A committee was set up to engage with managers of major investments like Rafia City Hotels (Four Points by Sheraton) to strengthen business partnerships.
This committee will submit its report within 30 days and will also propose how to manage Ibom Hotels and Apartments properly, including setting up a board to oversee their operations.
Furthermore, the council talked about improving security and the beauty of Ewet Housing Estate. People who own undeveloped plots or abandoned buildings there have been given 90 days to start developing them or lose their ownership.
The Ministry of Housing and the Akwa Ibom State Property and Investment Company (APICO) will ensure this order is followed.
The council also discussed preparations for the upcoming Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival and told the organisers to speed up their plans for a successful event.
Finally, the council received updates on the International Hospital project and asked the Ministries of Health and Justice to quickly complete all legal and administrative work so the project can begin soon.
