The truth about my link to Abacha – Peter Obi speaks

Peter Obi has finally cleared the air on his past meeting with the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, and according to him, it had nothing to do with politics.

Obi, in a statement titled “Our Engagement with General Abacha: Setting the Record Straight,” said the meeting happened decades ago when traders and importers were battling massive delays at Nigerian ports.

“I had never met General Sani Abacha before that encounter,” Obi said.

According to him, he and others were co-opted into a government Taskforce on port decongestion — a move to save businesses and restore economic sanity.

They approached Abacha, not as politicians, but as concerned citizens.

“Our intention was simple: fix the ports. No politics. No backdoor deals,” Obi stressed.

To prove this, he attached a letter officially appointing him to the Taskforce.

He also threw shade at his critics.

“I don’t expect this copious evidence to bury this Abacha case,” he said. “The mischief makers have their agenda. But this is for posterity.”

Obi insisted the meeting was about national interest — not personal ambition.

“This is in line with my pledge of transparency to Nigerians,” he added.
