The Lagos State Government has reopened the Purple Mall, located on Freedom Way in Lekki Phase 1, for business operations following a temporary closure prompted by a tragic incident.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, who led a delegation of senior government officials to inspect the premises.

According to Wahab, the mall was shut down to allow for a thorough administrative investigation after a fatal accident in which a young man died when his vehicle reportedly fell from the top floor of the mall’s parking structure.

“We immediately requested all relevant documents from the mall’s management and launched an investigation,” Wahab said.

“At the end of our review, it was clear that due diligence had been followed and the required approvals and paperwork were in place.”

He explained that the State Government’s internal investigation had been concluded satisfactorily, noting that the ongoing police inquiry—which concerns the loss of life was outside the government’s direct purview.

“The mall cannot remain sealed indefinitely while the police continue their probe. From our administrative perspective, we are satisfied,” he added.

Wahab acknowledged the public outcry that followed the incident, particularly on social media, where accusations were directed at regulatory bodies such as the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lagos State Building Control Agency, and the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority.

He stressed that the temporary closure was essential to independently verify compliance with safety and environmental standards.

“The shutdown allowed us to thoroughly assess the structure, review safety compliance, and identify any potential lapses,” Wahab stated, describing the incident as tragic and deeply regrettable.

The government reiterated its commitment to public safety and transparency in development approvals and regulatory enforcement.
