Ohanaeze confirms talks between Tinubu, Umahi over Nnamdi Kanu’s release
The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has confirmed that President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, are currently in behind-the-scenes discussions with top Igbo leaders to secure the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The group made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday, signed by its Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Publicity Secretary, Chief Thompson Ohia.
According to Ohanaeze, Senator Umahi is leading the quiet diplomatic moves with full support from the group and other key Igbo stakeholders.
“These talks have created meaningful pathways that could lead to Kanu’s release, depending on the final decision of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja,” the statement said.
The group clarified that Kanu’s legal representatives have not yet been involved in the talks, but they would be brought in at a later stage to ensure transparency and unity.
Ohanaeze also appealed to pro-Biafra supporters to halt all forms of protests and inflammatory statements, assuring that Kanu’s release will not be tied to any political bargain.
“We want to state clearly that there will be no political conditions attached to Kanu’s release. President Tinubu will not use his release as a tool to secure political support from the South-East,” the group said.
The body also cautioned against public attacks on Minister Umahi or the Federal Government, warning that such criticisms are either misguided or fueled by selfish interests that benefit from Kanu’s continued detention.
The statement added that President Tinubu is currently reviewing all legal aspects of the case and is expected to take decisive action soon.
Ohanaeze concluded by urging the president to act in the interest of national unity: “We call on President Tinubu to do what is just and right, not only for Ndigbo but for the peace and progress of Nigeria. The release of Nnamdi Kanu will be a bold step toward national healing.”
