Chris Brown, Omololu Akinlolu in UK court over alleged bottle attack
American R&B singer Chris Brown and Nigerian-American Omololu Akinlolu have been in a UK court facing allegations of a violent bottle attack at a pricey London nightclub.
They are alleged to have attacked Abraham Diaw at Tape nightclub, an exclusive members’ club in Mayfair, late on February 19, 2023.
British prosecutors report that Diaw was in the bar as Brown supposedly beat him repeatedly with a bottle and then chased and battered him again with some assistance from Akinlolu in part of the club.
The two made their first appearance on Friday, July 11, at Southwark Crown Court, denying:
- Attempted grievous bodily harm with intent
- Assault occasioning actual bodily harm
Chris Brown is also charged with possession of an offensive weapon — the allegedly used so-called bottle.
Brown, 36, was arrested on May 15 by Metropolitan Police at Manchester’s Lowry Hotel on his arrival in the UK on a private plane to play on his stadium tour.
He was detained at HMP Forest Bank, Salford, and released on May 21 after forking out an eye-watering £5 million (₦9.7 billion) security bail.
Upon his release, the singer shared on Instagram:
“FROM THE CAGE TO THE STAGE!!! BREEZYBOWL.”
His co-defendant, Akinlolu, 39, is said to be an American of Nigerian origin.
Even with the legal storm, Brown has continued to tour from town to town, with a concert in Cardiff in June.
The trial has been scheduled to begin in October and the two defendants are likely to spend time in jail if convicted.
