JUST IN: Olomu mourns as monarch Uhurhie-Osadjere II joins ancestors

The Ohworode of the ancient Olomu Kingdom, located in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, His Royal Majesty Uhurhie-Osadjere II, has passed away. The revered monarch’s death marks the end of an era for the Olomu people, who now mourn the loss of their traditional ruler and spiritual leader.

The official announcement of his passing was made at the royal palace in Ovwor-Olomu community by the Otota of the kingdom, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje (SAN).

He was accompanied by members of the Olomu traditional council of chiefs as well as the late king’s family members, who stood solemnly to confirm the sad news to the public.

His Royal Majesty Uhurhie-Osadjere II had ascended the throne of his forefathers on May 20, 2023, and ruled the kingdom with wisdom and dedication for nearly two years.

The formal announcement of the monarch’s departure was marked by the traditional firing of 21 cannon shots, a gesture symbolizing the gravity and respect associated with the death of a royal figure.

Traditional Ema dancers also performed, honoring the king with a cultural display that is reserved for only the most significant and sacred occasions.

As part of the customs surrounding the passing of a ruler, the Olomu Kingdom has declared a period of mourning which will last for one month, beginning on Saturday, July 12, and ending on August 12, 2025. During this mourning period, the entire kingdom is to observe a state of solemnity and respect in memory of the late king.

All markets within the kingdom are to remain closed throughout the mourning period. While shops may be allowed to operate, business transactions will be limited to essential or partial activities. In line with tradition, no burial or marriage ceremonies are to be conducted during this time as the community focuses on honoring the memory and legacy of the Ohworode.

Traditional chiefs of the Olomu Kingdom have also been instructed to wear a mourning band on their left wrists. In addition, they are to refrain from wearing the traditional red cap, which is a significant symbol of Olomu chieftaincy, for the entire duration of the mourning period.

The passing of His Royal Majesty Uhurhie-Osadjere II has left a deep void in the hearts of his people.

He will be remembered for his leadership, cultural stewardship, and unwavering commitment to the unity and development of the Olomu Kingdom. Plans for the transition of leadership and the rites of passage for the late monarch are expected to be announced by the traditional council in the coming days.
