Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has spoken out following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, accusing the late Nigerian leader of inflicting grave damage on his family.

In a video posted to his Instagram page, Seun — the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti — declared that no Nigerian family suffered more under Buhari’s rule than his own.

He recalled the persecution and alleged injustices endured by his father and uncles, the late Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti and Koye Ransome-Kuti, during Buhari’s military regime in the 1980s.

“There’s nobody Buhari has offended and damaged like my family,” Kuti said. “Buhari dealt with my family, but his death is not any type of justice or victory for us.”

The outspoken artist expressed regret that Fela and his uncles died long before Buhari, stating that they were “better men” than the former president. Seun added, half in jest, that his only consolation was the thought that his late relatives might now confront Buhari in the afterlife.

“My only regret is that my dad Fela, and my uncles Koye and Beko died before him,” he said. “The only solace I can take from his death is that the three of them will gang up against him in the afterlife if there’s such a thing.”

Buhari, a former military ruler and two-term civilian president, died on Sunday at a clinic in London. His remains were flown back to Nigeria and buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday with full military honours.
